Project 1: Classroom Redesign
Classroom Iteration 1:
This classroom was redesigned to aid in social aspects and comfortability. Stools are used to aid in a more natural sitting position and the tables are bigger for students to be encouraged to sit with other classmates. Additionally, there are power outlets dispersed on the counter-tops so students do not have to move to a different place to charge their devices.
In the Fall of 2023, I was assigned the task of redesigning our classroom for the Inventive Design class at Tufts University. This classroom needed to be redesigned according to the elements we believed were important for students’ learning. I completed two iterations of classrooms that helped achieve this goal. To provide context, the original classroom we were basing our redesign on had numerous rectangular tables that could only fit two students at each one, a limited number of power outlets around the room, and the chairs were plastic roller chairs.
Classroom Iteration 2:
This classroom was redesigned to mainly aid in social and collaborative aspects amongst students. Although this classroom maintains the standard roller chair design, I have chosen to include pie-shaped desks that are adjustable in height and angle. The angle and height of the desks are adjustable so the student can customize their writing and reading experience according to what makes them the most comfortable and efficient. These desks are pie-shaped as well, so they can easily be put together and pulled apart to create different groups of students for collaboration. When eight desks are put together, they create a circle of desks, which creates a more intimate and inclusive environment over any other shape of desks and tables. Lastly, portable whiteboards were included in this design so students could keep track of their collaboration and ideas with one another while staying in their same table formation.
